Whenever tax-paying Americans demand that government tighten it's belt,
the big-government-loving liberals (both Democrats and Republicans)
immediately respond with threats that "Police, Firefighters, and
Education" will be the first to be cut.
Never mind for a moment that laying off a bunch of union public school
teachers would likely improve education - that's a debate for another
day. The larger question is why they invariably go right for the throat of truly vital services like Fire and Police, while ignoring the cornucopia of
social welfare services that, while they certainly have plenty of
free-loaders taking advantage of them, are hardly "essential government
services" - most should never have been the business of government in
the first place.
At this point, the hand-wringing socialists usually huff and puff,
demanding that you tell them "what programs YOU would cut." Well,
purely as an educational exercise, take a gander at just ONE government
site:
http://www.usa.gov/Citizen/Topics/Benefits.shtml
Titled "USA.gov - Government Made Easy" it lists an unbelievable array
of programs. Yes, yes, I know, some of these government services are merely
informational, and some, like benefits for veterans, are justifiable as
government responsibilities, but note how many are nothing more than various
"easy" ways that society's parasites can get something for nothing. Oh, FYI, the word "assistance" is almost always gov-speak for "money" - which of course comes from those of us who actually pay taxes.
Take a deep breath, then take a gander:
Government Benefits, Grants, and Financial Aid
Need government help? Get official information on grants, loans, financial aid, and other benefits from the U.S. government:
Youth Education and Training Assistance
So, the next time some bureaucrat whines that they can't find ANYTHING to cut, give them some suggestions.
